Artistic Statement by Whitney Fontoura:
The art I make with my music has the purpose of taking the listener out of the world for a moment. My music penetrates the heart to soar in a way that is healing. It touches on a spiritual level that bypasses any walls that might be up and transports the listener, intimately, to a place where the healing begins to happen. Stars have always been so fascinating to me, and it is up there, with them, that I am inspired in my music. This deep connection with the universe offers a reexamination of one’s life and answers, to take the transformation felt beyond the moment of experience. Art is truth, and the truth is that we may experience a transcendance of reality to find it. For me, the truth is not necessarily about preserving history, but capturing its feelings and inspiring the future. If we see the truth through music, we are stimulated to become that potential.
Music is not just about playing correct notes, rhythms, or dynamics. There is life in the music. It is a living essence that moves, and there is beauty in dissonance. Many of my choral pieces and arrangements of contemporary songs call for good form and technique. I explore the fullness of sound that is mostly created by four to eight part acapella harmonies and strive to create a film score, symphony-like approach to my music. Because I first started out in band, I have an affinity for the merge of instrumental scoring into pure human voicing.
